What we dig

If the job needs a bucket and reach, this is the page. Typical work:

  • Trenching for drainage lines and utility runs. We dig and backfill; licensed utility or plumbing contractors make the connections.
  • Cut and fill to rough grade a site, open a pad, or correct a low spot. See house, barn and shop pads.
  • Tree and stump removal with the Kubota KX057-5 excavator on lots, house sites and fence lines.
  • Ditches and culverts dug to grade so water leaves the property. See culverts and drainage.
  • Soft-spot dig-outs for driveways and pads, and loading and hauling spoil off site.

Equipment that fits residential ground

Our main excavator is the Kubota KX057-5, a compact machine that gets into yards, fence lines and wooded lots a full-size excavator cannot. For tight spots and finish work, the SVL97-2 track loader follows behind. We haul spoil with a dump trailer. That setup is built for homesites, farms and small commercial jobs rather than large civil projects, and we will tell you if a job is bigger than our equipment.

What Middle Tennessee ground does to a dig

What is under the surface changes the job more than what is on top. On the Highland Rim around Lawrenceburg and Pulaski, chert and gravel make for sharp, loose digging, and clay layers hold water in a trench. In the Central Basin around Columbia and Lewisburg, limestone can sit a foot or two down in one place and be deep clay thirty feet over. A wet week turns clay spoil into a mess to move. We read the ground as we go, and we tell you when rock or water is changing the plan.

Before anyone digs

Call 811 (Tennessee 811) before any digging so buried utilities get marked, which takes several business days. Tell us where you know a line, septic tank, well or drain field sits. Flag the boundaries and what stays. We will ask whether the locates are done before we break ground.

How a dig job goes

We walk the site and mark the line or area. We decide where the spoil goes before the first bucket, so the pile is not sitting on the route or the septic field. Then we dig to depth and grade, backfill in lifts, and leave the ground graded rather than as a trench-shaped scar. Seeding and straw afterward are up to you unless we agree otherwise.

What moves the price

We quote after walking the site. The factors are volume of dirt, depth and length of the dig, rock or water, how far the spoil goes and whether it can stay on site, access for the machines, and the time the job takes with the machine. Free on-site quotes.

Frequently asked questions

What size jobs do you take?

Residential, farm and small commercial work: trenches, pads, ditches, tree and stump removal, and cut and fill. Large civil or deep commercial excavation is outside our equipment, and we will say so.

Do you haul the dirt away?

Yes. We load spoil into the dump trailer and haul it off, or place it on site if you need fill elsewhere on the property.

Can you dig a trench for water or electric lines?

We dig and backfill the trench. The pipe or conductor and the connections are done by the licensed plumber, electrician or utility.

Do I need to call 811?

Yes. Tennessee 811 locates buried public utilities before any digging. Put the request in several business days ahead and tell us if you know of private lines.

Do you do excavation for a foundation or basement?

Small foundation and slab digs can be part of site work, within what a compact excavator can handle. We do not pour concrete or build the structure. Share the plans and we will tell you what we can do.

This goes into our job book. Or call (931) 458-1500.
